Seven years of bank statements, checked and on the record.
Sevenyear reads a deceased person's bank statements, flags the likely lifetime gifts for your team to confirm with the executor, and prepares a draft IHT403 schedule. Every known account and every month is either covered or recorded as a gap.
In development for probate firms in England and Wales. We're looking for a small group of firms to pilot it. Or see a sample report.
Statements rarely say which payments are gifts.
Gifts made in the seven years before death can count towards inheritance tax, and when a full account is needed the executor lists them on HMRC's form IHT403. Spotting them means going through up to 84 months of statements for every account, usually with a highlighter. Even Lloyds' own estate service asks families for seven years of statements and any gift over £250.1
to administer one £650,000 estate with up to £50,000 of lifetime gifts, by one firm's published estimate.2
one online provider's fixed fee for the grant only, without and with the inheritance tax forms.3
formal inheritance tax enquiries opened by HMRC in 2025-26, up 18% and the most in six years.4
See it on a fictional estate
Follow one school-fee payment from the bank statement to the draft IHT403 schedule. Then open the case demo: in Read, click any line to see where it's printed on the statement and every check it passed. The other steps show the workflow we're building.
How it works
The executor decides, with your team's advice. Sevenyear does the first pass and the write-up.
Each screen shows the fictional estate in our case demo and sample report.
-
Gather Known accounts, months and gaps
Upload the statements you have, and add the family's names, which Sevenyear uses to recognise payments to them. It lists the missing months, spots accounts that appear in transfers but weren't supplied, and drafts a request letter to each bank for your team to send.
-
Read Each line checked
Sevenyear reads every line of every page, then checks it against a second, independent read of the same page: the PDF's own text, or an OCR read for scans and photos. Where the bank printed balances, it checks those too. Any line that fails a check goes to your team with the reason, and every figure links back to the printed line it came from. Pages without printed balances are marked as not balance-checked. It's being built for bank PDFs, scans and phone photos of paper statements.
-
Flag and confirm With the executor
Sevenyear flags regular transfers to people, large one-offs, standing orders and school fees, each with a reason. Your team marks each one with the executor: a gift, not a gift, or a loan. Items marked not a gift stay in the record.
-
Draft and record For your file
You get a draft IHT403 schedule to check and file. You also get a report for your file: every account and month reviewed, each gap and what you did about it, and every decision.

Where it fits in your firm
Fixed-fee providers
Some fixed-fee price pages leave estates with lifetime gifts out, or cap the gifts they cover.3 Could you quote a fixed fee on those estates if the gift trawl had a predictable cost? That's the question we want to test with fixed-fee firms in the pilot.
Private-client teams
Designed so a paralegal can run the gift trawl, with a record of every account and month checked. If your trawls are already billed in full, the record may be the part you want.
Made for the UK
Designed around UK bank statements and HMRC's IHT403, with the seven-year window set from the date of death. Your clients' statements will be hosted and processed in the UK.
What your file gets
- A draft IHT403 gifts schedule, for your team to review and file.
- A list of missing months and accounts, with a drafted request letter for each.
- A report showing which accounts and months were reviewed, each gap and how it was handled, and who decided what: a record of the enquiries made, for your file.

How we work
- The executor decides.
- Sevenyear flags items with a reason. The executor and your team decide what counts as a gift.
- Every flag stays in the record.
- Each flagged item will appear in the report with the decision and who made it, including the ones marked not a gift.
- We draft, you file.
- We never contact HMRC or a bank on anyone's behalf, and we never hold or move money. Request letters are drafts for your team to send.
- Data will stay in the UK.
- Statements will be hosted in the UK, encrypted and used only for your case: deleted when the case closes, or for the pilot, when the pilot ends. In the pilot we also review the lines that fail our checks, to learn why. Before the pilot, the agreed data terms will set out what we keep, how identifying details are removed, and when records are deleted. We'll confirm the UK processing arrangements with our providers before any firm's statements arrive.
Questions
What the pilot involves, what it reads, how it uses AI, and what it might miss.
What does the pilot involve?
A pilot firm puts in two or three estates it's working on now. Your team does its gifts work as normal. We go through the same statements alongside you and send you our draft schedule and report before you file, then a side-by-side comparison once your own schedule is done. You file your own work, and we never contact HMRC, a bank or the family. The pilot is free, and pilot firms get their first 10 estates after launch free as well. We delete the statements when the pilot ends. Join the list and we'll send the pilot terms once our solicitor has agreed the data terms.
Does it replace our judgement?
No. It does the first pass through the statements and the write-up. The executor decides what counts as a gift, with your team's advice, and your team reviews the draft schedule before it is filed.
Which statements can it read?
Bank PDFs, scans and phone photos of paper statements. Our tests so far use synthetic statements: PDFs, simulated scans and simulated phone photos. Real statements and real phone photos come with the pilot. Statements that show running balances can also be checked against those balances, so the request letters ask banks for them. A bank printout without balances is still read and checked line by line, and is marked as not balance-checked.
What if the bank no longer has the old statements?
Banks don't always keep old statements, and what they can still supply varies, especially for an account closed years before the death. Sevenyear still drafts the request letter. If the bank can't supply them, those months are recorded as a gap, with the request and the bank's reply, so your file shows what was asked and what came back.
Does it use AI?
Yes. An AI model reads every line of every page, and a second, independent read checks it: the text inside the bank's own PDF, or a separate text-recognition (OCR) read for scans and photos. Fixed rules check each line's amount, wording and date against that second read, and against the balances where the bank printed them. Any line that fails a check goes to your team, with the reason. Then rules and a model suggest which items look like gifts, each with a reason, for your team to confirm. We'll only use providers whose terms bar training on your data.
What might it miss?
Gifts paid to an organisation for someone else, such as a grandchild's nursery or a relative's care home, are the hardest to spot from a statement line, and cash that was given away never shows who received it. Sevenyear flags what the statements suggest; your team can flag any other transaction by hand from the full list, and add gifts the statements don't show, such as cash the family remembers. It covers payments in the bank statements reviewed: exemptions and reliefs, gifts of other assets and gifts with reservation of benefit stay with the executor's adviser.
What will it cost?
We expect to charge per estate. We'll use the pilot to help set the price.
Couldn't we just scan the statements and sort them in a spreadsheet?
You could, and many teams do. If a typical estate takes your team an afternoon in a spreadsheet, you may not need us. On the ones that don't, the work is in the detail: turning seven years of PDFs, reprints and photos into clean rows, checking every row, tracking the statements that never arrived, grouping recurring payments such as a monthly standing order to a grandchild, and linking each decision back to its page. Sevenyear is being built to do that first pass and keep every flagged item with the decision and who made it.
Why not just use ChatGPT or Claude with a prompt?
A general-purpose AI tool can help pull out transactions, and the readings still need checking. Sevenyear is being built to add the checks around the reading: each line against a second read of the page and the balances the bank printed, where it printed them; a list of the months and accounts that are missing; the printed line behind each figure; and the same method on every estate, so your team gets a draft schedule to check and file.
Can executors use it without a solicitor?
Not yet. We're starting with probate firms. Join the list for updates if we decide to offer it to executors directly.
Why now
For investors and anyone curious about the opportunity.
UK estates sent HMRC a full inheritance tax account for deaths in 2023-24. Each had to account for lifetime gifts, including the 38,000 that owed no tax.5
From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and pension death benefits fall within inheritance tax. In 2027-28, the government expects about 10,500 more estates to owe tax and about 38,500 to pay more.6
Statement-reading tools exist for divorce and anti-money-laundering work. We haven't found one built for the UK seven-year gift review.
More figures
of deaths forecast to lead to an inheritance tax bill in 2030-31, up from 4.8% in 2024-25. The forecast includes the pensions change.7
of inheritance tax paid on lifetime gifts in 2023-24, by 1,390 estates.8
probate grants in England and Wales in 2025. Legal professionals applied for 56% of grants in April to June 2026.9
